This year we worked in conjunction with 350.org to do a service project on the second weekend in October. Thank you to all the students who did the Day of Service this year! Here are some reports from participating schools:Bethel University Submitted by Patty Lin Gathering out on the lawn in front of our main building, a group of us got to work potting spider plants (great air cleaner - reduces indoor air pollution) and planting lettuce seeds in terra cotta clay pots, 100% biodegradable bamboo pots (will break down after 2-3 years), donated yogurt containers and an assortment of other containers. We had a great time getting dirty (literally...) on the warm, Sunday afternoon. After setting our pots on display, we passed them out to roommates, friends, and teachers to raise awareness for 350.org/carbon emissions (plants take in carbon dioxide!)  Messiah College This weekend, Laura Dagley, head of Messiah's Earthkeepers, already had an event planned! Laura had the idea to demonstrate how much is trashed that could be recycled. She worked with facilities staff around campus to collect bags of trash and Earthkeepers made compelling signs to set up outside the campus dining hall. The students made piles for each type of recyclable and ended up with very little that actually had to be thrown out. Messiah has a recycling system in place with clearly marked receptacles all over campus. Hopefully this will encourage students to make better use of this system and look before they drop. With a little bit of attention, much can be averted from landfills and made into something else instead. Messiah students also run a farm table with produce from the student-run Grantham Community Garden. They sell to other students and make a little extra money to put back into the garden plot that helps supply CSA members and the dining hall.   Kings University College Kings students cleaned up their community garden and had fair trade hot chocolate and coffee from a local company afterwards! Gordon College Coming soon! Covenant College Submitted by Lauren Westerman For the Day of Service a small group from Covenant College's Campus Stewardship Committee volunteered at Crabtree Farms from 10 AM to 1 PM. Crabtree Farms is a farm located near downtown Chattanooga that works to promote research and education in sustainable agriculture. We were able to help Crabtree Farms dig up the sweet potato harvest and lay all the potatoes out to dry and cure. To finish the day, we then stopped to grab lunch at the Greenlife Grocery deli.   Eastern University Eastern students planned a big BYOB (Bring Your Own Bike!) tune-up event. The idea was to get students to volunteer for creation restoration projects in exchange for bike service. Unfortunately the event got rained out but now they have an idea for an event in the future! Keep up the good work and stay posted for Renewal's Day of Prayer which will happen in February 2011! |
