We seek to be an advocate for sustainable development, environmental justice, and campus ecology. We are especially concerned with mountain top removal, air quality, and land stewardship, all of which are pressing issues in our part of Appalachia. We support recycling and other campus initiatives and sponsor periodic outings to provide opportunities to experience and enjoy the natural world in our bioregion. Our meetings, activities, and events vary from year to year depending on the interests and concerns of our members. Sometimes we write letters and sign petitions to promote environmental policies we believe in. Sometimes we sponsor informative and inspirational films. Sometimes we do service projects at such places as the Mossy Creek Wildlife Observation Area and Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center. Sometimes we plan outings to enjoy God's awesome Creation through hiking, biking, camping, and canoeing. We also enjoy art and music and like to integrate those things into our work and play related to the natural world. One important campus event we coordinate each year is Earth Day on or around April 22. This usually involves a chapel, community forum, service event, and outing. We like to collaborate with groups who sponsor EarthFest and other celebrations and events in our bioregion. We are blessed at Carson-Newman to study and work at a college in a truly beautiful part of God's natural creation. We are 20 minutes from Panther Creek State Park, an hour from the Appalachian Train and the Smoky Mountains, 10 minutes from Cherokee Lake and the Holston River, and just a few minutes by foot to the Mossy Creek Wildlife Observation Area with its stunning variety of bird and aquatic life. At the same time we have air pollution galore, mountain top removal, and the loss of wildlife habitat and wilderness at alarming rates. Why would you study or work at Carson-Newman and not be involved? |
